The men and women of the Barnes Air National Guard Base's Fire Department hosted their 11th annual charity golf tournament at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield on August 8 at 10:00 a.m. Proceeds were donated to the Holyoke Soldiers Home.

In the last 11 years, this tournament raised nearly $35,000 for the Holyoke Soldiers home and other veteran organizations. In 2007, the tournament brought in a record $7,000 which the Soldiers Home used to replace and upgrade many of the antiquated televisions throughout the facility.

"It is important for us to be active in the community, and this tournament allows us to do that while making a difference to those who have sacrificed so much," said Fire Station Lt. Lawrence Buell, tournament director.

This tournament draws competitors and supporters from around Western Mass; working together to benefit the men and women whom have made extreme sacrifices for our liberties and freedoms. This year's tournament will accommodate more then 100 golfers, including members of the 104th Fighter Wing, friends of the Holyoke Soldiers Home and members from neighboring Fire Stations.

The tournament again raised nearly $7,000 with the help of generous sponsors such as General Dynamics, Boston Billiards, Commercial Distributing and Valley Marketing.
